Toyota Turns Yaris into “Hot Hatch” Performance Machine with the Toyota Yaris GRMN

Does Toyota Make a Hot Hatchback?

The name Toyota is synonymous with many enviable automotive traits. Reliable, versatile and forward-thinking are among the most apparent. With their TRD-Sport models, and the 2018 Toyota Camry, however, Toyota is looking to see their incredible racing credentials transferred into more performance-minded consumer vehicles.

The TRD Sport and TRD Pro models of the Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner and Toyota Tundra are enhanced and tuned by Toyota Racing Development feature performance upgrades. On the other hand, the 2018 Toyota Camry features a sporty new design, and is available with a V6 engine capable of outputting over 300 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of torque.

And who can forget the devilish and sporty Toyota 86?

One performance segment that seems to be absent from Toyota’s lineup, however, is the “hot hatchback” or “hot hatch.” This term is used to describe a performance-derivative of a hatchback vehicle (3-door or 5-door models). Only recently growing in popularity stateside, the hot hatch has been a fixture of international street and track racing. The hot hatch represents an appealing compromise – a performance car that can be driven every day and taken to the track on the weekends.
