Roundabouts. What are they for and how exactly do you navigate one? Whether you’ve got some practice under your belt or are frantically googling on the side of the road (which we do not recommend), we can help you figure them out.
How do roundabouts work?
These nifty European road devices are designed to keep traffic from getting backed up at intersections that would otherwise be host to stop signs. Though the idea might seem strange—driving in circles to move faster—roundabouts work quite well. Fortunately they follow many of the same rules as run-of-the-mill stop sign intersections, so they’re not as daunting as they might seem.
What do I do when I get to a roundabout?
Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. But heads up: it might be helpful to draw a bird’s eye view along with reading this to make sure you’ve got everything ironed out just so.
- Drive up in the right lane. Turning right? Use the right lane. Turning left or making a U-turn? You guessed it: left lane. If you’re going straight through, you can usually use either. Keep an eye on those road markings!
- Look left: if there’s another car heading toward you (because the driver is turning left or making a U-turn), stay put. If the other driver is going through the intersection or turning right, go ahead and pass through at the same time.
- If you’re turning right, go ahead and turn right. You can do this even if there’s another car going around the roundabout or making a left or U-turn, you can still turn right if there are two lanes.
- If you’re turning left or making a U-turn, drive around the roundabout until you’re facing the part of the intersection you need.
- Don’t go too fast and don’t change lanes while you’re driving around the roundabout. That’s it!
