Is the Toyota Grand Highlander going to be built?
The Toyota Highlander was one of the charter members of the incredibly popular crossover SUV class of the automotive industry. Not only did the Highlander help popularize the segment, but it often set the bar for everyone else. Toyota has made some pretty significant upgrades for the Highlander in recent years. However, something even bigger (literally) could be on the horizon. One of our teammates was looking at the latest automotive industry news and started wondering, ‘Is the Toyota Grand Highlander going to be built?’ Joey Capparella of Car and Driver magazine seems to think this is a distinct possibility. Our manufacturing partner has recently filed paperwork to trademark the Grand Highlander name. Let’s take a look at what this might mean.

What is the Toyota Grand Highlander?
According to Capparella’s post from early January 2021, a future Grand Highlander platform will likely retain the same three-row crossover SUV architecture used by the existing Highlander model. However, it will probably be larger to accommodate more passenger room and cargo volume.
While the Highlander continues to be a strong contender in its class, some of its newest rivals are larger. The challenge for Toyota designers and engineers will be to increase the interior volume available to buyers versus the existing Highlander, while also retaining its nimble handling characteristics.
Obviously, it is way too early in the process to know precisely what kind of powertrain a Toyota Grand Highlander may have.
However, Caparella’s article makes a strong case for it to use a V-6 engine similar to what is being used now, possibly a hybrid engine and/or a plug-in hybrid setup like the RAV4 Prime.
When will it go on sale?
Any new addition to the Highlander family won’t be coming for a while. The source article puts an expected arrival date for the Toyota Grand Highlander in the 2023 or 2024 model year.
