Toyota has kept up its frenetic pace in continuing to develop its lineup of SUVs. For another model year, the Toyota 4Runner will retain its place as an off-road-ready platform that can also function just as well as a daily driver. A comparison between the 2021 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2021 Honda Pilot is very interesting on several fronts. Both vehicles offer similar performance specs and similar levels of connectivity potential.
However, potential owners of the 2021 4Runner are going to likely skew more outdoorsy and that is where the Toyota platform will truly excel over its longtime Honda rival. In fact, independent online reviews have praised the 2021 4Runner for its nearly unmatched off-road potential as well as its wide variety of internal configurations.

Toyota has employed the same powertrain in the 4Runner for a long time. The 2021 version will have the same naturally aspirated 4.0-liter, V-6 engine under the hood that will be attached to a five-speed automatic transmission. It will make 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Every 2021 4Runner will have the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds, regardless of what drivetrain is used two- or four-wheel-drive. The 2021 Honda Pilot will use a 3.5-liter, V-6 mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It will make 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A two-wheel-drive version of the 2021 Pilot can pull 3,500 pounds, all-wheel-drive models can tow 5,000 pounds.
Three rows of seats can be available in the 2021 Toyota 4Runner. However, most people will choose to keep the two-row configuration. When people are sitting in the back of the 2021 4Runner, there can be up to 47.2 cubic-feet of cargo volume. A 4Runner with the seats folded down can make as much as 89.7 cubic-feet of cargo volume available. The three-row configuration is going to be more common. However, the 2021 Toyota Runner is able to offer more rear cargo space in both corresponding seating configurations.
Every 2021 Toyota 4Runner will have access to the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ suites of applications. The 2021 Pilot can make this kind of connectivity available, but buyers will have to move into upper trims to match this capability. Additionally, the 2021 4Runner will work with the Amazon Alexa digital assistant and it makes a Wi-Fi hotspot available on all trims. Honda Pilot owners can also use a Wi-Fi connection, but it’s only found on the crossover SUV’s three most expensive trims.
