For the upcoming 2021 model year, Toyota is making a pair of engine options available. The base powertrain setup for the 2021 Toyota Corolla continues to be a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that is attached to a continuously variable transmission. It will make 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. L, LE and XLE trim grades will use this powertrain. Lexington Toyota customers looking for more performance can also find a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine under the hood, that will make up to 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Toyota will offer the more powerful engine with a CVT as well, however, some trims will come with a six-speed manual. The SE, XSE, Nightshade and Apex models will use this setup.
The 2021 Corolla will deliver impressive fuel economy scores, just like every model year that came before it. Versions of the popular compact sedan with the six-speed manual will be able to achieve just under 30 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon or better on the highway. A 2021 Corolla with the CVT will achieve about 30 mpg in the city and just less than 40 mpg on the highway in most cases.
Toyota has never been shy about making the Corolla standout from the competition. The 2021 Toyota Corolla Apex Edition will be a limited-run accessory package that can be applied to SE or XSE trim grades. Only 6,000 Apex models will be produced. In addition to several exclusive accents for a refined visual appeal, the 2021 Corolla Apex Edition will ride on a track-tuned chassis with several high-performance upgrades. It will be powered by the 2.0-liter engine and employ the six-speed manual transmission.
